Lake of light
An homage to the full moon; originally written for the Blue Moon, but the Strawberry Moon has equal claim to it.

I looked for you in near-dark last night.
The setting sun leached slowly out of the sky,
but you stayed hidden,
refusing to compete for the kingdom
that belongs to you by night.
Your court awaited your arrival patiently,
planets and stars, twinkling, waiting,
as the world stilled and darkened for you.
It was late when you rose above the city lights,
proud and full,
looking in at me through the window,
beckoning me outside,
your silver-gold light
pouring onto your world.
The heavens made way, a hush fell
and I stood there, looking.
You only reveal yourself when you want.
You hide things better left unseen,
you mesmerize and mystify,
show shapes and hide secrets.
You pull my tears like the tides.
Last night, I whispered hidden wishes to you,
pleas and prayers sent up
to your lake of light.
You listened, knowing, in the velvet night.

“You hide things left better unseen” amazing piece 👏
I was especially drawn to “You only reveal yourself when you want.” It felt as though the moon became a mirror for all the things in life that cannot be summoned, only received. A beautifully quiet poem.
